Kaslo Youth Film Camp Spring 2014 – Final Films

Despite a small group, the Kaslo Youth Spring Film Camp was a success once again. The three keen filmmakers who partook in the camp took full advantage of the smaller class size to get maximum camera and editing time. Many thanks to Betty at Taqueria del Corazon for being such a gracious interviewee and for the fabulous lunch. While the group spent the majority of their time working with the cameras, they completed the weekend with a short final film.

Enjoy:

Facilitated by Nelson BC filmmaker Julien Locke, the 2014 Kaslo Youth Film Camp took place at the Kaslo & District Public Library and was supported by the Columbia Basin Trust.

Haywood NorAm Buff Sprints in Rossland – Women

And the women’s racing:

Emily Nishikawa of the Alberta World Cup Adademy won the 2013 Black Jack Haywood NorAm Buff Sprints in Rossland, BC. Following barely a boot length behind, teammate Heidi Widmer edged out Rocky Mountain Racer’s Olivia Bouffard Nesbitt in a photo finish. Katherine Steward Jones of Nakkertok was the top Junior Women of the day, breaking off of the front and skiing solo to the line.

Haywood NorAm in Rossland – Buff Sprints – Men

Images from the 2013 Haywood NorAm Buff Sprints in Rossland, BC. An international field made for tough competition in soft 0ºC conditions. Eric Bjornsen of the Alaska Pacific Univeristy out sprinted Miles Havlick of Sun Valley in a tight dash to the line to win the Senior Men’s category. Graham Nishikawa was the top Canadian in third. Matt Saurette of Rocky Mountain Racers was the fastest in the Junior Men’s competition.

Kaslo Youth Film Camp 2013 – Final Films

I was lucky enough this past weekend to teach a group of 8 youngsters (ages 11-14) from Kaslo BC the art of documentary filmmaking. With the cooperation of Aaron at Buddy’s Front Street Pizzeria, the students learned about planning a film, conducting interviews, operating DSLRs, and editing in Final Cut.  In just 6 hours from start to finish, our two groups produced these two short films:

Frozen Thunder Skate TT

With nearly ever top cross country skier and biathlete in Canada in attendance, the 2013 Frozen Thunder skate time trial turned out a competitive field. 4 laps for the women, 6 for the men around a 2.3km loop at the Canmore Nordic Centre. USA’s Caitlin Gregg took the top spot in the women’s race, with Ivan Babikov leading the men. Results can be found on Web Scorer.
